Fujifilm XT2 - From an automotive photographers mind and perspective

This review might be a little different but automotive photography is a field that is catching up very quickly and is one of my main interests along with writing. The most important thing for any photographer in this field is the camera and it should be one that can keep up with the moving vehicle and also have enough autofocus speed to capture the moment at the right time. To sum it all up it needs to be a workhorse.
Fujifilm is one manufacturer that looks to have its own take on photography with their X-Trans sensors and brilliant cameras and their flagship XT2 is the culmination of all their efforts with this sensor type and for these types of purposes, this camera is a perfect fit for the budding photographer who wants to take cars. The camera contains a 24-megapixel X-Trans sensor which is of the Bayer format and of APS-C variety which means it is smaller than full frame and being mirrorless means that lenses are extremely light and the inbuilt electronic viewfinder helps one to see the changes made inside and in real-time so that they nail that shot of the vehicle showing the curves and lines that accentuate its design and also ensure that the color pops out and attracts people.

What I love the most about the camera is the overall placement of the buttons for exposure changes and even drive modes giving us an analog experience along with the advancements in modern technology such as mirrorless sensors and fast lenses.

In the back one will find the various function buttons for changes such as iso, drive modes, white balance and even a joystick is found to change the focus around the vehicle to get the particular element and focus the whole photo around that. The built-in 3.0-inch display is also tiltable to the bottom and side making vertical and portrait shots easy for those who specialize in these photos and is bright enough to be viewed in good light.

Autofocus is, in this case, a hybrid of both contrast based and phase detection and the 325 points ensure that one has enough space to move around and accordingly frame their subject which in this case is the vehicle standing still or is moving.

The shutter speed goes to about 1/32000th of a second under electronic shutter for those who hate the mechanical type and want no sound and 1/8000th for the mechanical variety making it very flexible for those whose workflows in this industry are according to how they take the photos of vehicles especially in racetracks and motorsport events for track days. Also, present are various drive modes and it can take photos of vehicles at a ridiculous 14fps for fast action shots and one never misses that moment provided they have the additional battery grip to achieve the said number. Otherwise, it takes these photos at 8fps which is way faster than the standard APS-C DSLR's and some full-frame DSLR's even. The ISO of the sensor ranges from 100 to a crazy 51200 for extreme situations where low light is present and the surroundings cannot be captured directly by the camera.

Fuji has also kept the video geeks occupied by offering us 4k for that crispy quality and the all-important slow motion rolling shots can be achieved without sacrificing on details. This is a boon for those who are into videography for cars and with the very wide lens selection one can create excellent daylight videos and at the same time craft some low light masterpieces with the city lights and empty roads along with music being played. Ah... One who loves these types of videos will exactly know the feeling of having a tool which can do exactly that and they will not regret their decision of buying it in the first place.

Fujifilm has lately been largely known for their excellent color science and for automotive photographers it is perfect as by purposely underexposing the photos under good light means one can save the highlights and that can be brought up in post-production giving an overall attention-grabbing moment for the viewer.

To sum it all up though this camera is a dream for me and being priced at Rs. 1,40,000 it is on the expensive side but the whole experience is worth it and one can be guaranteed of some brilliant photos and the lens selection is one of the most unique and different from other companies nowadays. For those lucky enough to get this, camera congratulations as you have rewarded yourselves with a brilliant piece of kit which is fit for any job and for an automotive photographer it is definitely a workhorse.
